Province: Álava
Álava (Basque: Araba) is a province of northern Spain in the southern part of the autonomous community of the Basque Country. It is bordered by the provinces of Burgos, La Rioja, Navarra, Guipúzcoa, and Biscay. Within Álava is Condado de Treviño, an enclave which is part of Burgos province, Castile and León, the capital of the province is Victoria.
The climate is mild in summer, fitful in autumn and spring, and very cold in winter, as even the plains are high and shut in on three sides by mountains snow-clad during several months.
Álava is an eminently industrial province, its chief activities being the manufacture of iron, steel, agricultural machinery, cars, playing cards, furniture, glass-ware and handicraft ceramics. The North specialises in ciders, the south, known as Alava Rioja is famous for wine. Lakes Zadorra and Ullivarri are surrounded by green mountains and offer facilities for all kinds of water sport. Also fishing can be found in the rivers Bayes and Zadorra, including trout, cray and many other fish. All the Basque regions are well known for their tasty cuisine and choice selection.
