Palencia is a province of the of the indipendent community of Castiglia and Leon, in the north western part of Spain. It borders with Cantabria to the north and with the provinces of Burgos at east, Valladolid to the south and León at ovest.
The capital is the city of Palencia and its climate is mediterrean with wide temperature swings. The average temperature in Jennuary is 0°C and in July 18°C, but in the winter it can get up to minus 14°C. In the summer it rarely becomes hotter then 40°C and there is a medium yearly rain-fall.
Some of the most see worthy sights are the flamboyant Gothic Cathedral, built from 1321 to 1504, dedicated to San Antolín, stands over a low vaulted Visigothic crypt and its museum contains a number of important works of art, including a retablo of twelve panels by Juan de Flandes, court painter to Queen Isabella of Castile. The Archeological Museum contains Celtiberian ceramics. Palencia is also famous for the 13th-century church of San Miguel and the Benedictine monastery of San Zoilo, housed in an 18th-century rococo structure by Juan de Badajoz.
